MEZTLI PROJECTS

Meztli Projects supports the creative development of Native and Indigenous artists.

We were founded with the intent to address the severe lack of artistic opportunities for Native and Indigenous Artists as-well-as systems-impacted youth living and creating in Los Angeles County (Tovaangar). This work takes shape in several forms such as for-hire opportunities, advocating for truly equitable resources such as but not limited to funding and culturally authentic (not just relevant) programming, and training future and emerging cultural workers.

Adrienne Kinsella (Tongva) is a fine artist, working in a variety of media, focusing on drawing and painting. As a descendant of the Tongva of Los Angeles, issues of access and belonging, or lack thereof, is a theme that spans her work. Her representational works examine interiors, exteriors and collapse timelines in an ongoing search for “home.” Native plants function as both symbols and direct references to longevity within the landscape, and like time travelers bridging past and present, they quietly declare, “we are still here.” The life cycle of plants holds deep meaning for the artist, suggesting that hope springs from seemingly dead things, a promise of regeneration from even the tiniest seeds.

In her piece What Is To Give Light Must Endure Burning Kinsella presents an oil painting that explores the concept of fire as a catalyst for renewal. As a descendant of the Tongva of Los Angeles, Kinsella examines humanity’s relationship to place, exploring how we inhabit landscapes and the lasting impacts our actions have on both the land and one another. Central to this perspective is her understanding of fire as a regenerative force, noting that “many of our native plants must experience fire in order to germinate, such as the Matilija poppy,” emphasizing renewal as an essential part of the natural world.

What Is To Give Light Must Endure Burning is a part of Meztli Projects’ exhibtion Nurtured Flames: The Medicine of Fire at The Armory Center for the Arts located at  145 N Raymond Ave, Pasadena, CA 91103.
